International Students Gain Real World Experience at Savills

11 December 2015

Savills has welcomed four Year 12 students from Jeonnam Office of Education, and Incheon Electronic Meister High School, South Korea into their Brisbane office, providing them with an introduction to work practices and the business culture of Australia, with the education program having been sponsored by TAFE Queensland and International House Brisbane-ALS, and supported by the Brisbane City Council’s engagement with South Korea.

The four week international work experience program is the by-product of Brisbane City Council signing a Memorandum of Understanding to train Korean government funded groups for language training, with Savills assisting International House Brisbane-ALS, who work closely with many government agencies in Australia and from overseas to provide a wide range of language and work experience programs. This South Korean Government funded program is known to contribute over $2 million each year to the economy of Brisbane and its education industry.

The students; Woojin Joo, Jun Lee, Seongyeong Kang, and Yeongjin Kim, are from a specialised vocational high school and a Meister high school, which provides a level of education equivalent to Australia’s TAFE and have been studying Business Administration, Telecommunication, Electronic Control and Electronic Design over the last three years with the aim to attain a qualification equivalent to that of an Australian Certificate IV.

Thus far at Savills, two of the students have assisted the Information Technology department with a wide variety of tasks including updating IT documentation, imaging computers, solving IT issues, and installing computers, while the other two students have spent time with the Research department, demonstrating their prowess on the internet in tracking down information, having completed several demographic overviews to be used for submissions and prepared charts for use by the Commercial Leasing team.

“This program has been a worthwhile exercise for all those involved and follows on from a webinar presentation Savills did with the Brisbane City Council last year to government officials and major company representatives in Seoul, on general investment opportunities in Queensland,” Savills Director of Research for Queensland, Paul Day said.

“Shared activities between Australia and the Republic of Korea such as these can only be good in cementing relationships with what is now Queensland’s fourth largest trading partner.”
