Energy & Sustainability Management (ESM) Team At Savills Singapore Appointed For Green Mark Consultancy At Great Eastern House

12 June 2023

For Immediate Release – Savills Singapore has been appointed for Green Mark Gap Analysis and Consultancy for Great Eastern House at 49 Beach Road. The Energy & Sustainability Management (ESM) team will be providing comprehensive services to ensure the building meets the stringent requirements of the prestigious Green Mark certification.

The ESM team identified the areas to focus efforts and capabilities towards Great Eastern’s goals with their 3-phase approach which is targeted to be completed by April 2024.

These include:
• Gap Analysis
• Consultancy, Preparation of information for submission to BCA
• Final Review and Application to BCA

The ESM team has secured this Green Mark consultancy agreement through a price bid exercise with Great Eastern, a Singaporean multinational insurance company and subsidiary of OCBC Bank operating in the Asia-Pacific region.

Samuel Han, Associate Director of Energy & Sustainability Management comments, “We are honoured to serve as the Green Mark consultant for Great Eastern House, helping them achieve their desired sustainability rating. We share a strong commitment to sustainability and aim to deliver exceptional value through our services. Our goal is to help clients gain a comprehensive understanding of Green Mark principles and the multitude of benefits it offers.”

In line with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, a nationwide movement to promote sustainable development, Singapore has set a target for at least 80% of all buildings (by Gross Floor Area) to be certified green by 2030 by the Building & Construction Authority (BCA). The financial services sector has shown very strong commitment to adopting green office spaces, alongside the government, industrial and retail sectors.

Mr. Han adds, “This initiative sets an example for companies to enhance or upgrade their assets to be more energy efficient and sustainable. With Great Eastern’s overarching goal of achieving operational net zero, I am delighted to facilitate their journey of greening their property.”

Marcus Loo, CEO of Savills Singapore says: "Multinational corporations are increasingly becoming assertive in their pursuit of environmentally sustainable buildings. Whilst many assets have some element of green mark certification, we are certainly receiving more enquiries from owners to assess how they can attain the highest grading. To obtain the bare minimal green credentials will be foolhardy as we expect the raising of Green Mark standards to intensify as we move towards 2030. Our ESM team aims to provide strategic solutions to asset owners and end users not only for the short but long term as well.”

As an organisation, Great Eastern has made key strides in integrating sustainability into its business operations and organisation culture. In 2021, they have set an ambition to attain net zero for their operational carbon emissions by 2025.

Buildings account for over 20% of Singapore’s carbon emissions which is why greening of buildings is a critical step. The Green Mark certification scheme is a national green building rating system designed to evaluate a building’s environmental impact and performance, and considers factors such as energy efficiency, water and waste management and indoor air quality. These are key elements which are important in Great Eastern’s sustainability objectives as they consider the well-being of both the people and the planet.

Ronnie Tan, Group Chief Financial Officer, Great Eastern, said: “In support of the Singapore Green Plan 2030 and as part of our corporate ambition to attain operational net zero by 2025, we are pleased to appoint Savills Singapore as Green Mark consultant for Great Eastern House. As a property owner, we have obtained Green Mark certification for the rest of our commercial properties in Singapore. We look forward to working together with Savills to support our collective ambition for a climate-resilient and low carbon future.”

Savills' dedication to ESG and sustainability is demonstrated through its mission to connect more people with green properties. By providing energy and sustainability management solutions, Savills helps its clients to achieve their sustainability goals and contribute to a more sustainable future.
